First term, by the numbers

There are many accomplishments that I’m proud of as I reflect on my first term in office:

  • I never missed a day of work and earned a 100 percent attendance record, which adds to my perfect attendance during my 3+ years on the Southfield City Council. I take the job of representing my constituents very seriously.

  • I held 20 coffee hour meetings where residents shared their thoughts on state government and participated in thought-provoking discussions. I also held an additional 6 town halls on topics including oil drilling, education policy, senior issues, regional transit, and water quality.

  • I led the introduction of 10 bills with bipartisan sponsors that overwhelmingly passed the House to expand transparency in state government by including the Legislature and Governor’s office within Michigan’s open records laws.

  • I sponsored Public Act 232 of 2016, which was signed into law to make the closing process easier for home buyers. I also introduced legislation to eliminate partisan gerrymandering, protect consumers’ private financial data, increase home accessibility for seniors, help lower insurance rates, and limit the influence of money in politics.

  • When outstate developers came to our district to drill for oil adjacent to our neighborhoods, I organized a public hearing to confront the MDEQ. I acted quickly to introduce legislation that would protect our safety and welfare from residential oil drilling.

  • As the Democratic vice chairman of the House Local Government Committee, I served as acting chairman of the committee just six months into my tenure as State Representative, marking the first time in recent years that a member from the minority party has chaired an entire legislative committee meeting with action items on the agenda. I also served as a member of the House Commerce and Trade and House Regulatory Reform committees.

I couldn't have done any of this without my dedicated staff and the engaged residents of the 35th House District who keep me informed about the issues impacting our district, which allows me to effectively represent their best interests.

I’m looking forward to another productive 2 years working for you!
