Moss runs away with Democratic nomination for 35th District House race

Youth has proven to be no obstacle for Jeremy Moss.

The 35th House District candidate cruised to comfortable victory in Tuesday’s Democrat primary election, earning 51 percent of the vote to second place Nicole Brown’s 27 percent.

Moss, who was the youngest Southfield City Council member when he was elected in 2011, could be the youngest Democrat in Lansing if he beats Republican Robert Brim in the November general election.

The nomination had yet to sink in late Tuesday, but Moss was noticeably excited about the next steps.

“I grew up in this community, I was raised in the 35th House District, I’m a public school graduate from the 35th House District and I’m really a product of every corner of this district,” he said. “So to be able to represent the concerns and issues and needs of this community is an honor, and the fact voters trust me to do that is something I appreciate.”

Based on unofficial results, Moss recieved 6,541 votes to Brown’s 3,507. Candidate Darryle Buchanan, a Southfield Public Schools Board of Education member, finished third in the race with 1,909 votes, while Charles Roddis garnered 844 votes.

Moss feels confident about moving forward in November as the seat is typically held by Democrats, and said he starts working tomorrow on “making sure the Democrats reclaim the House.”

“This one party rule in Lansing isn’t working for the residents of the 35th House District,” he said.

The 35th State House District includes Lathrup Village, Southfield and Southfield Township. Rep. Rudy Hobbs currently serves in that role, but is term-limited.
