All Southfield city elected officials endorse Rep. Jeremy Moss

Southfield’s mayor, seven-member council, clerk and treasurer jointly announced their endorsement of Rep. Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield), who is seeking a second term in the Michigan House of Representatives.

“Jeremy has truly represented our city’s best interest in Lansing by fighting extreme Republican measures to limit local control and our ability to advocate for our citizens. He was a leading opponent against the so-called ‘Death Star’ bill that overrides local employment laws like we have in Southfield that protect middle-class wages and workplace standards,” Southfield Mayor Kenson Siver said. “I’m also thankful that our strong working relationship allows us to continue to oppose residential oil drilling in Southfield.”

Moss partnered with the mayor earlier this year to set up a public hearing in Southfield that was attended by 1,000 residents on an oil drilling permit before the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. He also introduced House Bill 5258 that would limit oil drilling in densely-populated Michigan communities like Southfield.

“Simply put, Jeremy has done exactly what he said he would do as state representative: listen to the concerns of our constituents, fight for our community’s values in Lansing and keep an open line of communication to Southfield City Hall,” Southfield City Council President Myron Frasier said. “Because of his dedication, Southfield is fortunate to have such strong and effective representation in the State Legislature.”

Within his first month as state representative, Moss took direction from the Southfield City Council and introduced House Bill 4197 to allow the Commercial Rehabilitation Act (PA 210 of 2005) to continue, a tool the city used to eliminate commercial blight, attract economic investment and raise property values. As a result of his efforts, the senate version of Moss’ legislation became law in December 2015.

Joining Siver and Frasier in supporting Moss’ re-election bid are Council President Pro Tem Lloyd Crews and Councilmembers Dan Brightwell, Donald Fracassi, Ari Mandelbaum, Tawnya Morris and Joan Seymour. Moss also earned the endorsement of City Clerk Nancy Banks and City Treasurer Irv Lowenberg.

“It’s an honor that officials within Southfield City Hall have unanimously placed their trust in me to continue to serve,” said Moss, the minority vice chairman of the House Local Government Committee. “I value our continued partnership and will continue to rely on the support and expertise back home to keep me effective in Lansing.”

Moss’ 35th House District includes the cities of Southfield and Lathrup Village, and the villages of Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and Franklin in Southfield Township.
