Southfield State of the City address set for March 18


Tickets are now on sale for the 2013 State of the City address, happening at 11:30 a.m. March 18 at the Westin Hotel, 1500 Town Center.

It’s the annual event that unveils all the city’s changes, plans and hopes for the coming year. Mayor Brenda Lawrence will deliver the address during the Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting.

'13 may see rebirth of Southfield arts group


Following on the heels of the hugely successful Detroit Institute of Arts outdoor art exhibit in Southfield, the City Council is reviving a public art commission.

“The purpose of this is to get art out into the community,” said council President Ken Siver, who presented an outline of the commission's structure to fellow council members at a recent meeting.

There was rarely a dull moment around Southfield and Lathrup Village during the last year.

Whether it was a reason to celebrate, like the grand reopening of the Southfield-Lathrup greenhouse, or a reason to mourn, such as the death of 10-year-old Xavier Joe after Southfield EMS reportedly didn’t reach him in time, headlines through 2012 reached all community members.

Southfield city officials have long hoped to create what they call a City Centre, located in the general area of Evergreen and Civic Center Drive. Bad spelling aside, the idea is a good one that holds promise.
